There is some imagery that is also quite chilling. With that said, much of the creepy elements of this film feel a little recycled. There’s nothing particularly cutting edge with the design or style of Warning Do Not Play, and it ultimately ends up not being very memorable visually. Much of the film’s strength is in its story. Not without it’s blemishes, the plot of this film spins a bizarre web of history behind the infamous ghost film and the theater that is central to the narrative. It almost feels like a dedication to the passion for movies. A scary statement about how far a filmmaker is willing to go to complete their films. Shudder’s newest exclusive is definitely worth a look. The story is engaging and the atmosphere is effective. What it lacks in style, it makes up for in execution. If Warning Do Not Play and the recent Japanese cult hit, One Cut of the Dead, are any indication, Shudder will be a good place to see new buzzworthy Asian horror films that are worth the watch. Overall, the story holds your attention & feels pretty creepy throughout. However, the latter part of the movie gets a bit muddled, which makes the conclusion feel a bit confusing at first. Still, it’s film-within-a-film setup is interesting and I’d say it’s definitely worth a watch. Perfect for a rainy day. Entertaining abliet light on scares. A fun movie about a lost horror movie with some good creepiness. The first half is really spooky getting into the mystery, but once things hit the fan it lost me a little. Still, not a bad watch. While I did like this film more than I disliked it, it was very close. It had some cool gore and a few genuinely creepy sequences. Clearly, she is a Gwisin which is a vengeful Korean spirit. These spirits are usually found in abandoned buildings and died without completing something so their spirit remains on earth to hopefully complete the task, growing stronger the longer the task is uncompleted. Soon-mi was an actress in 1980 who died filming in a theater, she was shooting a hanging scene when a fire broke out. Her crew left her and ran, in her panic she kicked the chair out from under her and actually did hang herself. Horrifying. But Soon-mi is out for some fucking vengeance and it’s such a cool idea – she wants her damn movie to be made and for people to see it, and since she’s basically trapped in this abandoned theater, anyone who enters is at risk. The original director, Jae-Hyun, filmed the theater while Soon-mi killed his crew, he screened it, but it wasn’t enough to satisfy her. When Mi-jung ends up in the same situation, she successfully films her movie without killing anyone, then screens it to standing applause. Soon-mi is finally satisfied, we think. But to get to that point Mi-jung has to go through a lot of terrible shit, including being haunted by Soon-mi and she is SO terrifying. Firstly, we never fully see her, she appears in the dark corners, some burned fingers, an eye without an eyelid, stringy hair, bloody cheeks. We’re never shown a full shot which keeps you pretty terrified as your mind fills in the blank spots. But most importantly, Soon-mi makes some terrifying fucking noises. All I can think to relate it to is like an insect type noise, coming out of a dead woman’s throat, in the pitch black. Move over creepy girl from The Grudge, your noise has been read reviews of this movie and I’ve seen quite a few complaints. I’ve seen folx saying this movie is hard to follow, or reviewers referring to Soon-mi as a Yurei spirit. To those I say; do better. Pay more attention to a movie that has subtitles, work harder while watching it to fully understand the story. And secondly, do your fucking research. This is a Korean film, not a Japanese film. To me, this movie was a fascinating story to chew on and once I had pieced it together it was supremely satisfying. A well thought out plot that turns horror fans against themselves. Most of us watch horror to chase that feeling of fear, of the unknown. Warning Do Not Play throws that in our face – showing us what could happen if we took chasing our horror dream too far. It’s so damn good. There’s also many supremely unreliable narrators here that will twist your view point of the main characters over and is also an incredibly emotional film, both Jae-Hyun and Mi-jung have emotional pasts that play a big part in their story trajectory. It says a lot of about sacrifices and how far someone will truly go to achieve their dream. “You know what’s scarier than dying? I love stuff about cursed/haunted films total aside if you also dig stuff like that, I highly highly recommend the novel Night Film by Marisha Pessl, and there are some pretty creepy moments. Good use of lighting and atmosphere as pacing is just all over the place though. It felt super long even though it's only 85 minutes, and I found myself getting kind of bored more than once. The plot seemed too convoluted to me, but I confess that my mind was wandering a bit due to the boredom so it's possible I just wasn't paying enough has its moments, but unless you're a die hard K-horror fan I can't give it a very strong recommendation. It was well over a decade ago that I sought out Kim Jin-won's debut film, The Butcher. It had a small cult reputation for its brutality that intrigued me, and I managed to find it on DVD after a bit of searching at a convention I believe. How could I not see a movie w/ such a plot point? I've seen some praise this... I wish my opinion matched theirs. It will be explained why I encourage those who see this on Shudder do NOT press “Play”, watch something else story follows a young filmmaker who is in the horror genre and… Always loooooved the idea of cursed / haunted films - this has a good enough premise and some effective scares they're hit or miss and the ghost starts showing up too much to remain scary for me, but some of those early ones, particularly in Mi-jung's apartment worked well imo. I just can't help feeling a little underwhelmed by the script and the eventual direction this ended up. It's a fine, light, breezy watch, but nothing spectacular. When she finally watches it, strange things begin to happen and it becomes difficult to tell what is real and what is is a really cool film that I haven’t quite wrapped my mind around yet. What kills me about Warning is the potential of the ideas namely, the director's past trauma in the first act and the time overlap suggestions of the third act. At the end of the domino line, Mi-jung finally meets the man who made the fabled film. Physically and emotionally scarred, Jae-hyun is just a shadow of the upstart cinema student he was ten years ago. He responds to Mi-jung’s questions concerning his mystery movie “Warning” only with cryptic gibberish and violent by his deterrence, Mi-jung’s fascination with Jae-hyun’s film evolves into obsession. With help from Joon-seo, Mi-jung starts scouring clips for clues about what really happened in the abandoned theater where Jae-hyun shot “Warning.” Mi-jung may have finally found the scariest horror story imaginable, but it may come with the cost of becoming a murderous ghost’s next terrified target.“Warning Do Not Play” is simultaneously difficult yet somewhat simple to review. It’s both of those things for the same reason. Essentially, “Warning Do Not Play” is such a straightforwardly streamlined little haunter, it doesn’t leave a lot to really dig into with detailed competent in technical terms like cinematography, lighting, editing, etc., no one thing in “Warning Do Not Play” stands out as particularly remarkable, although I don’t mean that in a belittling manner. It’s just a challenge to come up with anything eloquent or entertaining to say since “it’s fine” suffices as a summary for almost every element of the story basically boils down to a standard yet serviceable Asian ghost yarn. In addition to the bit about being based on an urban legend, you’ll see beats that typically go with this territory including a wronged woman who turns into a stringy-haired phantom and some squishy scares involving an eyeball popping up for sudden staredowns. The “cursed film” component covers trampled ground too, though it makes for macabre milieus including a spooky scavenger hunt to uncover the truth, a crackpot hideout for the demented director, and light “found footage” pieces to fill in the down to two remaining sentences in my scant screening notes, which is uncharacteristic considering how furiously I usually type or write while watching a film. One of those notes is only an observational aside about the movie’s odd penchant for having the director physically assault Mi-jung whenever he gets angry, with no less than three separate scenes featuring his hands around her throat. Honestly, I think my inability to come up with anything clever or constructive to add speaks more to the wispy impression “Warning Do Not Play” leaves than my inability to contribute meaningful not sure I can say more about the movie without sounding like a high school student effectively shrinking the margins to make it seem like I hit the minimum word count. The basic concept tells fans familiar with Korean horror what they’re in for, which is a medium temperature thriller favoring atmospheric suspense built from breadcrumb trail plot progression over frightful sights and visceral shocks. Set expectations no higher or lower than “average” and the film will meet you right there in the will stay dry. Socks won’t leave your feet. Your mouth might widen in a yawn well before your eyes ever do the same out of shock. “Warning Do Not Play’s” casual creepiness can cash checks for a momentary goose pimple or two.
